MISSION AND VISION

MISSION AND VISION

MISSION

MISSION

To prototype a self-sustaining, co-created community that values curiosity, collaboration, and beauty as essential survival tools. Together, we will harness the awe of Iceland’s once-in-a-century total solar eclipse and the surrounding volcanic landscape to spark innovative co-creation. Inside The Portal at Iceland Eclipse, we will gather a curated constellation of artists, technologists, scientists, and cultural catalysts united by a shared purpose: to prototype a future rooted in harmony with place, planet, and possibility.

VISION

VISION

We will design projects, experiences, and prototypes that bridge cosmic inspiration with earthly sustainability. Emerging from a direct relationship with land, sea, and sky – and past, present, and future – our work will come to life during the festival under the total solar eclipse, then continue to ripple outward as a model for future living on Earth and beyond.

Design Your Own Mission:

Design Your Own Mission:

This is for Explorers. Rather than follow a fixed schedule, The Portal at Iceland Eclipse is an open framework designed to spark organic magic and experimentation. Alongside shared workshops, gatherings, and co-creation sessions, there is space for self-directed exploration and rest.

We will host skill-shares, roundtable conversations, and communal dinners, but much of the experience will unfold naturally based on the curiosities of the Seekers present. One afternoon might bring sunset yoga on a black sand beach or a late-night music jam; another day, an impromptu hike to a nearby volcano; and yet another, discussions on speculative futures and alternative energy resources.

You are invited to shape your own rhythm, balancing solitude and community, stillness and play, structure and spontaneity. The Portal provides the container. You bring it to life.

What to expect

Design Your Own Mission:

Workshops & Exchange

Step into a flow of guest-led and resident-driven sessions that weave together art, science, design, sustainability, and innovation. Evening salons and co-creation labs become fertile ground for new ideas and unlikely partnerships. Here, insight emerges through dialogue, play, and shared curiosity.

Co-Creation & Projects

Join a cross-disciplinary crew to merge art, science, and technology into forms that surprise even their makers. Small co-creation teams will gather around shared curiosities to prototype installations, performances, and experiments that will come alive beneath the total solar eclipse at Iceland Eclipse 2026.

Plan & Create

Bring your ideas into form through hands-on experimentation, design sprints, and open studio time. Makerspaces and shared tools will support your process as you prototype, test, and refine. Work with the Iceland Eclipse 2026 production team to shape your vision into an experience that comes alive during the festival.

Creative Hub

Our home base in Hellissandur offers access to shared studios, co-working areas, shared tools, a fabrication lab, and a landscape of infinite inspiration. Our central hub will host scheduled gatherings, spontaneous sessions, and moments of organic co-creation. It is both a meeting point and a playground for our creative community.

Wellness Practices

Begin your mornings with optional breathwork, meditation, yoga, or mindful movement sessions led by residents and visiting guides. These daily rituals of grounding balance the intensity of creation with care for body and mind.

Lead & Explore

Offer or join outdoor experiences that awaken connection and creativity. You might guide a midnight-sun hike, host a nature-inspired workshop, or simply share time in Iceland’s wild places to spark collective inspiration.

Ocean Bones: Wondering Forest

An early signal of how our future crews might learn to build with what the world offers, listening to shorelines now so we can listen to alien coasts one day.

The Pier

Henge at the Edge of the World

A first attempt to anchor the movements of the sky into local stone, honoring the geometry of the Moon.

Early in the program, the entire crew will gather in facilitated roundtables, creative labs, and brainstorming sessions to surface ideas, explore shared interests, and identify opportunities for collaboration.

From there:

  • Ideas take shape: Participants propose concepts, themes, needs, and curiosities.

  • Teams self-organize: People gravitate toward projects that inspire them. No assignments, no gatekeeping.

  • We build together: Groups design, prototype, test, revise, and produce throughout the month.

  • Projects come alive at the festival: Creations are shared with thousands during Iceland Eclipse, publicly and collectively.

You’re welcome to focus deeply on one project or float between multiple initiatives as energy, talent, and timing align. The Portal encourages evolution, cross-pollination, and collaboration across disciplines.

guided by the elements

At the edge of the world, where the North Atlantic meets the glacier-crowned volcano Snæfellsjökull, lies the town of Rif. This is the picturesque Icelandic village that we will call home during our time together. Nestled within the Snæfellsnes peninsula, known as “Iceland in Miniature,” you will be transformed by this ever-evolving, awe-inspiring landscape.

Venture beyond our pop-up village to explore the wild landscapes of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a place that feels both ancient and otherworldly. These journeys offer space for renewal and inspiration. Enjoy co-created nature immersions, soak in geothermal pools, trace the paths of ancient lava, hike across glacier light, and let Iceland’s elements recalibrate your senses. Each encounter with the land is a reminder of why we explore and what it means to belong to Earth and Cosmos. Participants are encouraged to self-organize outings to experience the region’s natural wonders firsthand.

common questions

common questions

Q: What is the The Portal at Iceland Eclipse?

A: The Portal at Iceland Eclipse is a month-long immersive analog mission co-creation journey for builders, dreamers, and visionaries who are ready to shape what comes next. Set in a remote village on Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, this analog for future living invites you to live, create, and connect at the intersection of art, science, and imagination.

Guided by astronauts and innovative leaders, you will take part in workshops, experiments, and wellness practices leading up to the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026. The ideas and projects you bring to life within The Portal at Iceland Eclipse will be shared beneath the eclipse and celebrated during Iceland Eclipse 2026, where the worlds of science, technology, music, art, wellness, and culture converge.

Q: Why Join?

A: The Portal at Iceland Eclipse offers a rare opportunity to step outside routine and enter a living experiment in creativity, co-creation, and exploration. Set amid Iceland’s volcanic shores and glacier horizons, participants join a diverse crew of change-makers, artists, technologists, builders, scientists, storytellers, and visionaries to prototype new ways of living and creating together.

Over the course of one transformative month, you’ll recharge your creative energy, forge lasting connections, and develop projects that culminate beneath the total solar eclipse of 2026, where your work will be shared as part of Iceland Eclipse 2026.

Q: Why Snæfellsnes?

A: We chose the Snæfellsnes peninsula because it truly feels like the edge of the world, where the North Atlantic meets volcanic peaks and the path of totality passes directly overhead. It’s a place shaped by both elemental power and quiet reflection, making it the ideal home for The Portal at Iceland Eclipse. Most importantly, this is where we’ll stand together beneath the total solar eclipse for over two minutes. This offers us a rare and transformative moment to pause, reflect, and feel our place in time and space. The eclipse invites us to consider where we’ve been, where we’re going, and how we wish to move into the future.

In this land, the isolation becomes the inspiration. Between sea and glacier, this small Icelandic village offers the space to think deeply, co-create boldly, and connect meaningfully with nature, with others, and with yourself. In Snæfellsnes, the distractions of modern life fade, and imagination has room to expand.

Q: How do I find accommodation?

A: You have the freedom to choose lodging that fits your rhythm, budget, and sense of adventure. A range of local options in Hellissandur and nearby villages are available, from cozy shared guesthouses and creative hostels to private cabins and family-run Airbnbs.

Q: Do you offer refunds if my plans change?

A: We do not offer refunds, but you may transfer your pass to an approved applicant.

To request a transfer, please email theportal@icelandeclipse.com and our team will assist you.

Q: How do I get to The Portal?

A: We’ve put together a full travel guide on how to reach Hellissandur, the home of The Portal.

TL;DR: Fly into Keflavík International Airport (KEF), Iceland’s main gateway. From there, we’ll provide shuttle transportation to and from Hellissandur at the start and end of the program.

Once your flight is confirmed, use the Transport Coordination Sheet to schedule your pickup and drop-off. We’ll make sure your journey from the airport to the edge of the world is seamless.

Q: How do I apply for a Work Exchange?

A: Want to offer your time and talents to this cosmic gathering? Apply by April 1 to join our Work Exchange program. While placements within The Portal are full, there are still opportunities to build and steward Iceland Eclipse alongside a devoted crew of makers, artists, and builders. From helping shape the physical experience to supporting the flow of the festival itself, this is an invitation to co-create the world we are gathering to inhabit.

[Apply for Work Exchange]

If you are selected for the Work Exchange program, your ticket cost will be fully refunded after your shifts are complete.

Q: How can I become a partner or sponsor of The Portal?

A: We welcome innovative companies, non-profits, foundations, individuals, and research institutions to join us as partners or sponsors.

Partners can co-create programming, showcase ideas, and engage directly with our interdisciplinary community. Sponsors help power the infrastructure, art, and experiences that make The Portal possible, while aligning their brand with global innovation and cultural impact.

If your mission aligns with sustainability, innovation, or culture, The Portal and Iceland Eclipse Festival offer a unique platform to bring that vision to life.
